Douglas fir grows tall and straight, mainly in the coastal and inland regions of British Columbia, Canada. It can reach up to 85 meters on the west coast and up to 42 meters inland. The oldest known Douglas fir discovered so far is estimated to be over 1,500 years old. Due to its high strength, Douglas fir is widely used in construction applications such as glulam beams and roof trusses.



Growth Environment


There are two main types of Douglas fir in British Columbia: coastal and interior. Coastal Douglas fir is distributed along the southern coast and Vancouver Island, and is rare in northern regions. Interior Douglas fir is found from southern BC to areas near the Yukon border, including Takla Lake.



External Characteristics


The bark of Douglas fir is thick and deeply furrowed into scaly ridges. Needles are 1.5–3 cm long, blunt or slightly pointed at the tip, dark green on the upper side and lighter underneath with two gray-green stomatal bands. The cones are oval to ovoid, about 8 cm long, brown and glossy. Seed scales are rhombic or nearly diamond-shaped. Bracts are longer than the seed scales, with narrow and pointed central lobes and broader, shorter side lobes.


In Canada, Douglas fir sapwood is light in color and narrow, while heartwood ranges from yellow to reddish-brown. The distinction between earlywood and latewood is clear, with latewood forming darker, distinct bands. The wood texture ranges from fine to medium with straight and uniform grain, though wavy grain may also occur. Quarter-sawn or plain-sawn lumber shows distinct growth rings. Knots are often surrounded by dried resin if they are not intergrown knots. Douglas fir contains resin and may have resin pockets.


Due to its excellent strength-to-weight ratio, Douglas fir lumber is one of the primary materials used in heavy timber construction. It can be processed into engineered wood products such as glulam, used for beams, columns, and roof trusses. Its natural grain and color also add aesthetic value to interior decoration.

In the domestic market, Douglas fir lumber is commonly used as structural timber in heavy construction. Due to its high strength and good gluing properties, it is also widely used in the production of glulam. Douglas fir is kiln-dried according to its final application. Its flexible processing methods make it suitable for a wide range of use cases.
