Yellow Cedar is one of the most durable wood species in the world. It has excellent natural resistance to decay and is an ideal material for industrial applications. It is widely used in boat building, sauna manufacturing, fine furniture, and both interior and exterior wood products.

Yellow Cedar grows along the coastal regions of British Columbia. Due to its straight grain, high strength, exceptional durability, and strong resistance to decay, it has high commercial value.



Growth Environment


Yellow Cedar grows along the coastal mountains west of British Columbia. It is commonly found in mixed forests, especially in old-growth stands at low elevations in central and northern coastal regions. It often grows together with species such as Western Red Cedar and Hemlock. At higher elevations, it can also be found alongside Mountain Hemlock and Subalpine Fir. Yellow Cedar can reach an age of up to 1,000 years, with some specimens exceeding 2,000 years.



External Characteristics


Yellow Cedar can grow up to 24 meters in height with a diameter of up to 90 cm. The trunk is relatively broad with clearly fissured bark and a conical crown. Branches are drooping with small, sparse twigs. The bark is thin and grayish-brown. The needles are dark blue-green, slender, and pointed. The cones are spherical, ranging from 6 to 12 mm in diameter. They are berry-like in the first year and become woody when mature.


The wood color is bright and uniform yellow. The sapwood is narrow and very similar in color to the heartwood. Growth rings are narrow, with a gradual transition from earlywood to latewood. It is typically straight-grained with a uniform texture. Growth rings are not prominent in rotary-cut lumber or veneer. Knots appear light yellow and may include occasional decay knots. It contains no resin and has a distinctive aromatic scent.


Yellow Cedar is a high-strength, stable, and long-lasting species known for its hardness and slow growth. Like Western Red Cedar, it has natural decay resistance. It is easy to machine and suitable for applications requiring high standards of quality, appearance, durability, and stability. It can be sanded to a very smooth finish.

The oldest known Douglas Fir is estimated to be over 1,500 years old. Due to its high strength, it is widely used in construction applications such as glulam beams and roof trusses.
