Canadian Hemlock grows along the coastal regions of British Columbia, Canada, as well as in the humid inland areas west of the Rocky Mountains. It typically reaches a height of 30 to 50 meters, with distinct drooping new shoots at the top. Hemlock is used in general construction and secondary processing industries. Its strength and stiffness make it a preferred material for furniture and long-span structural components, while its fine grain and excellent finishing performance also make it a popular choice for solid wood furniture applications.


Hemlock is one of the most abundant tree species on the coast of British Columbia. It is commonly marketed and shipped under the name Hem-Fir together with Amabilis Fir. Hem-Fir has a wide range of applications due to its good strength, appearance, and quality.




Growth Environment 


Canadian Hemlock is one of the most abundant species on the coast of British Columbia. It rarely forms pure stands and usually grows in mixed forests with species such as Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, and Western Red Cedar. It has a shallow root system, making it vulnerable to windthrow and wildfires. Hemlock is a shade-tolerant species.



External Characteristics


Hemlock typically grows 30 to 50 meters tall with a diameter of 1 to 1.5 meters. It can live up to around 500 years. The crown is narrow, and the new growth at the top is distinctly drooping. Most branches hang downward, and the foliage appears feathery. The bark is dark brown to reddish-brown and becomes thicker and more deeply fissured with age.

The needles are nearly flat, glossy, and soft. The upper surface ranges from yellow-green to dark green, while the underside is white. Needle length varies. Cones are green to purplish-red when young and turn brown as they mature.

Heartwood is light brown with a slight reddish-purple tint, while sapwood is nearly white to light brown and is sometimes lighter than the heartwood. Growth rings show a clear difference between earlywood and latewood. It is typically straight-grained with fine texture and good luster. Quarter-sawn lumber or veneer shows faint growth ring patterns and may contain small dark sound knots. It contains no resin but may occasionally show purple streaks or grain variation.
